Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, who amassed a 23-6 career MMA record and a 13-6 UFC record from 2007 to 2017, passed away on Sunday at the age of 38. Organ failure brought on by non-Hodgkin lymphoma and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a rare immune system illness, was the cause of death.

Johnson was one of the most feared punchers in the sport and participated in the UFC at welterweight, middleweight, and light heavyweight. When he made his UFC debut on June 12, 2007, in Hollywood, Florida, he had a record of 3-0 and defeated Chad Reiner in just 13 seconds.

He won 17 of his 23 MMA fights by knockout, and despite gaining a ton of weight over his career, he never lost his strength. In his two attempts to win the UFC light heavyweight championship, he was defeated by rear naked choke both times by Daniel Cormier. On May 23, 2015, at UFC 187, Johnson was first defeated by Cormier to claim the title that had been stripped from Jon Jones.

On April 8, 2017, Cormier once again prevailed via rear naked choke submission at UFC 210 in Buffalo, New York. That was Johnson’s last UFC fight and his last MMA match. He hooked up with Bellator and had a fight with the company before retiring to start a marijuana business.

On May 7, 2021, at Bellator 258 at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, he submitted José Augusto Azevedo Barros at 1:30 of the second round.

Johnson was always a kind kid, according to UFC president Dana White. “He was usually in entertaining battles and possessed a rare one-punch KO ability. He was a decent person. His family has my condolences.”

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is typically a curable form of cancer and is not seen as a death sentence. It is a lymphatic system issue. The lymph nodes work together to remove fluid and waste from the body. By eliminating alien cells and organisms, the lymph nodes function as small filters.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, however, is characterized by uncontrolled lymph node cell proliferation and invasion of other body areas.

The actress Jane Fonda revealed earlier this year that she had non-Hodgkin lymphoma and is receiving treatment. It struck actor Gene Wilder in 1999, but he recovered. Alzheimer’s disease-related complications led to his passing in 2016.

The immune system condition known as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, or HLH, is rare and typically affects infants and young children, however it can affect people of any age.

Johnson was a charming and soft-spoken man who was well-known among opponents for his strength, enormous size, and difficulties maintaining weight. He defeated numerous legendary fighters, including Jimi Manuwa, Glover Teixeira, Ryan Bader, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, and ex-UFC light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira via KO.

One of Johnson’s closest friends was Kamaru Usman, a former welterweight champion of the UFC. Johnson was a reclusive man who tried to keep his condition a secret. Usman stated to the current UFC lightweight Michael Johnson, himself, Rashad Evans from UFC Hall of Fame, and Johnson as “the magnificent four.”

Usman claimed on Sunday that some weeks ago, during a conversation with one of his coaches, he voiced worry that he would receive a call with unfavorable news.

Usman described him as like a turtle to Yahoo Sports. “Most of the time, he would remain in that shell, but occasionally, he would break out, reveal his true self, and interact with you. He would poke his head out, introduce himself, and then walk back inside.”

He claimed that Johnson visited his house a few months prior and that they had a pleasant talk, but even then, he was still missing some elements.

Usman remarked, “You know, that was kind of like [the late actor] Chadwick Boseman.” “Chadwick kept his problem hidden, and when he passed away in 2020, we were all so startled and stunned. Rumble would tell you these casual tales while undergoing renal dialysis, but he never actually explained everything to you. He didn’t want to experience unequal treatment. He didn’t want others to treat him differently as a result of what was happening when they saw him losing all this weight and going through these circumstances. He had such amazing athletic ability.

“He was able to transfer his heavyweight strength and welterweight footwork throughout his career. He didn’t really need to work because he was naturally gifted and remarkable. Although he believed he was working hard, there were levels he didn’t reach or perhaps didn’t want to reach. He came naturally. I was very impressed by that. He made it seem simple. He would strike a man, and the man would immediately fall to the ground. I mean, I worked so hard and invested so much time, and then I’d come to my senses and slam into this person while he was still standing there. Rumble’s level of ability was higher than ours.”

Anthony Johnson was a compassionate person, according to Cormier’s tweet about him: “For a guy who put dread in the hearts of so many people.”

Johnson formerly competed in wrestling and represented Lassen Community College in 2004 at 174 pounds, winning the NJCAA national championship.
