Getting a job

Sundqvist was born on March 23, 1994, in the Swedish town of Boden. Sundqvist grew up in Sweden and played for the Skellefte organization when he was young. After the hockey gymnasium school in Lule didn’t want him, he chose to play for Skellefte. Before the Pittsburgh Penguins picked him up in the third round, 81st overall, in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Sundqvist played for the Skellefte’s Junior team. In 41 games, he scored 22 goals and got 54 points. The Penguins weren’t sure about Sundqvist at first because he was big and hard to see because of where he lived, but European scout Tommy Westlund convinced them to give him a chance. Randy Sexton, the assistant director of amateur scouting for the Penguins, had this to say about Sundqvist after the draft: “He is tall and big, and he skates and plays hockey very hard. He has good hands near the goal and can score. His name is Penguin.” After being picked, Sundqvist was invited to the Penguins’ Prospect Development Camp. He then went back to his home country and played his first game in the Swedish Elite League (SEL) on October 24, 2012, with Skellefte against Frolunda HC. After training camp with the Penguins, on October 7, 2014, he went back to Skellefte AIK for the 2014–15 season. Sundqvist scored nine goals and had 19 points in his last season in the Swedish league, but he was often hurt and had to miss a lot of games. In December, Sundqvist got hit in the wrist with a puck and had to leave a game early. A few months later, Janne Jalasvaara hit Sundqvist in the face during a game. He had to miss time to get better. After the 2014–15 SHL season ended on April 27, 2015, Sundqvist began his professional career in North America when he was sent back to the Penguins’ American Hockey League (AHL) team, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Sundqvist stayed in North America during the off-season instead of going home to train. When Sundqvist thought about his choice, he said “It’s a big change…. I mean, I came here last year and played between six and ten games. I haven’t played any games since I got here, so I feel a big change.” Before the 2015–16 season, Sundqvist was trying to get a spot as the fourth line center for the Penguins. Sundqvist couldn’t go to the Penguins’ summer development camp because he hurt his hamstring, but he was healthy enough to go to their training camp. After training camp, Sundqvist was sent to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for a short time before being called back up to the NHL before the start of the 2015–16 season. The short-lived promotion was done to help players on their injured reserve list with their pay. When Sundqvist went back to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL, he played with Dominik Uher and Tom Kostopoulos on the team’s third line. He was called back up to the NHL on February 4, 2016, and played his first game against the Tampa Bay Lightning the next day. After going to training camp with the Penguins before the 2016–17 season, Sundqvist was sent back to the AHL. This was his best season in the AHL. He scored more goals and had more points than ever before. By the 16th game of the season, he had already scored more goals than he ever had before. [35] Sundqvist scored four goals in a game against the Hershey Bears on December 10, 2016. He was the third Penguin in team history to do so. He spent most of the season in the AHL. After 53 games, on March 10, he was called up for the first time. In order to join the Penguins in Edmonton for their game against the Oilers, he went from Wilkes-Barre to New York, then to Toronto, and finally to Edmonton. He got there late Thursday. He didn’t do anything useful during the game, but the next night against the Vancouver Canucks, he helped Ian Cole score the goal that won the game. When he went back to the AHL, his offensive play helped Wilkes-Barre/Scranton become the first team in the league to reach 100 points. Sundqvist scored three points in that game, giving him 103 for his career. After this game, Sundqvist, Jean-Sébastien Dea, and Derrick Pouliot were all called back to the NHL to play in the Penguins’ last game of the season. Sundqvist was one of three Penguins players to score more than 20 goals during the season, thanks to his offensive surge. Even though he spent some of the AHL season in the NHL, he finished the season with a career-high 20 goals and 46 points.
