Jesus Revolution Brings Shaun Weiss Back to the Big Screen After 15 Years

Jesus Revolution, the first movie in 15 years to feature Mighty Ducks star Shaun Weiss, is now playing in theaters.

The new film Jesus Revolution marks the return of former child star Shaun Weiss back to acting. Rising to fame in the 1990s, Weiss is particularly well known for playing goalie Greg Goldberg in all three Mighty Ducks movies. He’d also appear in other movies like Heavyweights and Pumpkin along with a handful of TV shows like Boy Meets World, The King of Queens, and Freaks and Geeks. After playing a bus driver in the 2008 comedy Drillbit Taylor, Weiss drifted away from acting, and hadn’t appeared in any other movies or TV shows ever since.

As those who’ve followed his story may know, Weiss would struggle greatly with addiction in the years that would follow, turning his time as a Hollywood star into a distant memory. Following multiple arrests at different times, Weiss was at rock bottom by early 2020 when he was arrested again after he was found under the influence of meth in a stranger’s garage he’d broken into. It was not a good place to be, but the ordeal also marked the moment when Weiss turned his life around, as he’s been successfully focusing on his recovery ever since.

After the news broke, many fans were saddened to see that Weiss was struggling, and some contributed to a fundraiser that was established to help get the former child actor back on his feet. He was gifted a full new set of teeth by a caring dental team to replace the ones he’d had that were lost or damaged due to his drug use. The burglary case was later dropped when Weiss graduated from a drug court program. Last year, he would celebrated two years of sobriety on the second anniversary of the arrest, and dipped his toe back into show business by performing stand-up comedy and even opening for Russell Peters.

Around that time, it was also revealed that Weiss had been cast in the Lionsgate movie Jesus Revolution. It has since been revealed that he plays a Vietnam Vet in the film, which begins in the late 1960s. The film just premiered in movie theaters as of Feb. 24, bringing Weiss back to the big screen since he was last seen there in 2008’s Drillbit Taylor. Considering its A+ CinemaScore and strong audience reviews, there are other reasons to check out Jesus Revolution, but for the fans of Weiss who’ve been supporting his recovery and comeback, the film may be especially enjoyable to see.

This comeback to acting seems to be coming in just a tad too late to get Weiss back involved with the Mighty Ducks franchise. The Disney+ series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers brought back Emilio Estevez for its first season, and that also included a reunion scene with several of the stars of the Mighty Ducks films. Estevez wound up leavnig that show ahead of season 2, and many viewers would apparently leave with him, as Disney+ canceled the show after its second season. A potential appearance in a third season seemed likely given Weiss’ return to acting, but the ship has sailed.

Even so, Weiss is back in movies, and it will be interesting to see where else he continues to pop up from here. You can watch Jesus Revolution now in theaters.
