Lucy Liu Joins The Rock & Chris Evans in Prime Video’s Holiday Action Movie Red One

Another big star has just been added to the cast of Prime Video’s Red One. In the works at Prime Video, the holiday movie was previously announced to star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Chris Evans. Now, per Deadline, it’s been revealed that Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels, Kill Bill) has boarded the cast as well. The film also features Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) who boarded the project last month.

Announced last year, Red One reunites Johnson with Jumanji series director Jake Kasdan. The screenplay comes from Chris Morgan, though no plot details have been revealed at this time. It has been described by Prime Video as a “globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy imagining a whole new universe to explore within the holiday genre.”

Kasdan is producing the film alongside Melvin Mar under The Detective Agency with Hiram Garcia, Dany Garcia, and Dwayne Johnson for Seven Bucks Productions. Sky Salem Robinson of The Detective Agency will co-produce.

Liu of course has plenty of experience with action films, starring in the Charlie’s Angels movies and Kill Bill: Volume 1. She also can be seen in the upcoming superhero movie Shazam! Fury of the Gods as a supervillain. Before that film is released in 2023, Liu can be heard in the animated Disney feature Strange World which hits theaters in November. This follows her voiceover work for the Kung Fu Panda series as the voice of Master Viper.

Red One Is Planned to Launch a Franchise

We don’t know much of what Red One is about, but the filmmakers have high hopes for the movie. It is designed to help launch a franchise that will branch out into other mediums. We’ll have to see how that turns out, but for now, producer Hiram Garcia said in an interview with Collider that it’s a “really big” project that is similar in tone to James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

“What I can tell you is that it is a very big Christmas movie,” Garcia said. “We’ve always wanted to do a Christmas movie, but we didn’t want to do the typical Christmas movies that tend to go a little bit broader, I think, in tone.”

He added, “We had been looking for something that matched, the tone and tenor of DJ and what DJ brings to the table, so was able to come up with a really fun Christmas idea, but in tone it’s much more of a Hobbs & Shaw, more of Guardians of the Galaxy in tone and vibe because you’re dealing with crazy mythological elements, turning a lot of tropes we know about the holidays on their head, but also really big action and globe-trotting.”

Red One does not yet have a premiere date set at Prime Video.
