Mark Hamill Shares Star Wars Themed Message of Support For Ukraine
The ongoing war in Ukraine has been a greater stand-off than could ever have been predicted, with the country holding off invading Russian forces for many months now. Over that time, many celebrities have voiced their support for Ukraine, and that has recently included Star Wars legend Mark Hamill who shared a very simple message, with a very appropriate Star Wars related piece of art.
Hamill shared an image of a single X-wing fighter standing off against a mighty fleet of Imperial Star Destroyers, something that requires no explanation in its relevance. To add to the effect, the X-wing is decorated in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, while the legend reads “Resist. Stand with Ukraine.” Alongside this, Hamill added his own message of “Niech Moc będzie z Wami,” which translated means, “May the Force be with you.”
The sharing of the supportive post comes days after Hamill virtually met with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky and became funding platform UNITED24’s ambassador. The Star Wars actor’s main project is to support the Army of Drones project, which will provide, as suggested, a number of drones, as well as maintaining and replacing them, as well as providing training for their pilots.
Of his meeting with Zelensky, Hamill told the BBC that Ukraine’s president referenced a number of movies when discussing the invasion, including Star Wars. Hamill said:
“It’s not hard to understand why… Star Wars was always a fairytale for children and fairytales are morality tales of good versus evil where good is clearly defined, evil is clearly defined and it’s not hard to extrapolate an evil empire with Russia invading a sovereign nation.”
The War in Ukraine Has Been Addressed in Hollywood
Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine at the beginning of the year as an escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian war that has been going on for almost a decade, the world of entertainment responded in a number of ways. This has included many large studios not releasing some of the biggest movies in Russia, and streamers like Netflix completely shutting down their operation in the country.
In addition to this, there have been a number of tributes and shows of solidarity seen throughout Hollywood, including Saturday Night Live holding back their opening skit in favor of a subtle tribute to Ukraine soon after the start of the invasion, something that they only done on very rare, somber occasions such as following the 9/11 attack on New York. Director Michael Bay, spoke out against the way the world became more interested in Will Smith’s Oscars slap than the terrible events happening in Europe, and in the summer Marvel’s Secret Invasion reportedly had to undergo some reshoots in order to avoid certain similarities to the events in Ukraine.
There is still currently no end in sight for the war in Ukraine, but it seems that with continued support from around the world, it is clear that as Hamill suggested, the Force is with the country until the end of the conflict, whatever that results in.
