Strange New Worlds Critics Choice Super Award Nomination
“A tremendous honor. Thank you,” tweeted Anson Mount.
On Wednesday, Feb. 22, Anson Mount reacted to his nomination for a Critics Choice Super Award nomination in the category of Best Actor in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Series, Limited Series, or Made-for-TV Movie on Twitter. Mount was nominated for his performance as Cowboy Captain Christopher Pike in the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. “A tremendous honor. Thank you,” tweeted Mount in response to the announcement of his nomination for the award.
It isn’t the only Critics Choice Super Award nomination for Strange New Worlds. The first season is also nominated for a Critics Choice Super Award in the Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Series, Limited Series, or Made-For-TV Movie category.
Critics Choice Super Awards Sci-Fi Round-Up
Mount will face nearly as high profile competition as Pike’s hair peak on Strange New Worlds. This includes Samuel L. Jackson in The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, Chiwetel Ejiofor in The Man Who Fell to Earth, Matt Smith in House of the Dragon, Diego Luna in Andor, and Adam Scott in Severance.
Actor Jeffrey Hunter originated the role of Pike in the original, unaired pilot episode for TOS, “The Cage.” Archive footage from that episode was recut and presented within a newly-shot frame story featuring Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) for the TOS season one two-part episode, “The Menagerie.” In the frame story, Sean Kenney played the role of the scarred and paralyzed Fleet Captain Pike.
In the Kelvin Timeline movies in which Pike appears, Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013), the character is played by Bruce Greenwood.
Mount originated the role in Star Trek: Discovery’s second season, in which Pike took command of the USS Discovery after the death of the previous Captain of the starship, Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs). In Discovery’s season 2 finale, Pike returned to the role of commanding the Enterprise.
Meanwhile, the other shows nominated in the category of Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Series, Limited Series, or Made-for-TV Movie alongside Strange New Worlds include Andor, For All Mankind, House of the Dragon, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and Stranger Things.
Strange New Worlds also stars Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley, Ethan Peck as Spock, Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura, Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel, Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas, Christina Chong as La’An Noonien-Singh, Babs Olusanmokun as Doctor M’Benga, Bruce Horak as Chief Engineer Hemmer, André Dae Kim as Transporter Chief Kyle, Dan Jeannotte as Sam Kirk, Gia Sandhu as T’Pring, Jennifer Hui as Ensign Christina, Rong Fu as Jenna Mitchell, Sage Arrindell as Rukiya, and Alex Kapp as the USS Enterprise Computer.
