The sale raises money for the Live Love Laugh Foundation’s “Counselling Assist” program, which offers free counseling services and promotes mental health. Early life and life as a model

Padukone was born on January 5, 1986, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her parents, who spoke Konkani, were from a Saraswat Brahmin family. Prakash Padukone, her father, used to be a professional badminton player. Ujjala Padukone, her mother, works as a travel agent. Anisha, who is her younger sister, plays golf. Ramesh, her grandfather on her father’s side, was the secretary of the Mysore Badminton Association. When Padukone was a year old, she and her family moved to Bangalore, India. She went to school at Sophia High School in Bangalore and finished her education before college at Mount Carmel College. She then went to the Indira Gandhi National Open University to get a Bachelor of Arts in sociology, but she had to drop out because her modeling career kept getting in the way.

Padukone has said that she was shy and didn’t have many friends when she was younger. Badminton, which she played competitively from a young age, was the main thing in her life. In an interview in 2012, Padukone said, “I would wake up at 5 a.m., go to physical training, go to school, play badminton again after school, do my homework, and go to sleep.” Padukone kept trying to make a career out of badminton while she was in school. She even played in national championships. She also played baseball in a couple of tournaments at the state level. Padukone worked as a child model while she was in school and playing sports. She first appeared in a couple of ads when she was only eight years old. She decided to become a fashion model when she was in the tenth grade. She went on to say, “I realized that the only reason I played the game was because my family did. So, I asked my dad if I could stop playing, and he didn’t get mad at all.” In 2004, she became a model full-time, and Prasad Bidapa taught her how to do it.

Early on in her career, Padukone became known for a commercial for the soap opera Liril and for modeling for other brands and products. In 2005, she walked the runway for the first time at Lakme Fashion Week for designer Suneet Varma. At the Kingfisher Fashion Awards, she was named “Model of the Year.” Padukone’s fame grew when she was in a popular print campaign for the 2006 Kingfisher Calendar. The designer, Wendell Rodricks, said, “Since Aishwarya Rai, we haven’t had a girl as beautiful and fresh.” Rodricks saw her at a jewelry class he was teaching in Ganjam and hired her for the Matrix agency. Padukone moved to Mumbai when she was 21 and stayed with her aunt there. That same year, she became better known because she was in the music video for Himesh Reshamiya’s song “Naam Hai Tera.”

Padukone soon started getting offers to be in movies. She thought she didn’t know enough about acting, so she signed up for a class at Anupam Kher’s film academy. After a lot of talk in the media, Om Shanti Om director Farah Khan, who had seen her in Reshammiya’s music video, decided to give her a part. Wendell Rodricks, a fashion designer, also says that he helped her get the part. Farah Khan wanted to cast a model in her next movie, so she contacted Malaika Arora. Rodricks, for whom Padukone had been modeling for about two years, told his close friend Arora about her. Arora, in turn, told Khan about her in 2007.

Career in acting

Padukone said in 2006 that her first movie would be the Kannada movie Aishwarya, which would be directed by Indrajit Lankesh. The romantic comedy was a remake of the Telugu movie Manmadhudu, and she played the lead role opposite the actor Upendra. The movie did well at the box office. Rediff.com’s RG Vijayasarathy liked Padukone’s presence on screen but said, “She needs to work on her emotional scenes.” By the end of 2006, Farah Khan had decided not to make Happy New Year. Instead, she cast Deepika Padukone in the drama Om Shanti Om (2007). Set in the Hindi film industry of the 1970s, the movie is about a struggling actor who dies soon after seeing the murder of the woman he loved. He comes back to life to get revenge for her death. Shah Rukh Khan played the main character, and Deepika Padukone played both a famous actress from the 1970s and a young woman who wants to be an actress. Padukone watched a few movies with Helen and Hema Malini so she could learn how to act like them for her role. Mona Ghosh Shetty did the dubbing for her voice. Padukone used Indian classical dance for one of the songs in the movie, “Dhoom Taana.” According to Dorling Kindersley, she “stunned audiences” by using hasta mudras (hand gestures). Om Shanti Om was a commercial success. It made 1.49 billion (US$19 million) worldwide and was the highest-grossing movie of the year. The entertainment website Bollywood Hungama’s Taran Adarsh said that she had “everything it takes to be a top star.” She won the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award and was nominated for her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Bollywood Hungama said that her big break came with the success of Om Shanti Om.

Padukone then played one of Ranbir Kapoor’s love interests in the romantic comedy Bachna Ae Haseeno, which was made by Yash Raj Films (2008). The movie made a lot of money, but Namrata Joshi of Outlook said that Padukone’s performance was disappointing: “She is like a statue and has no fire or zing at all.” In Nikhil Advani’s kung fu comedy Chandni Chowk To China, she and Akshay Kumar played twin sisters who are both Indian and Chinese. This was her first movie of 2009. It was made by Warner Bros. and had one of the biggest international releases for an Indian movie. Padukone learned how to do jujutsu and did her own stunts. Even with all the hype, Chandni Chowk To China was a financial failure. It didn’t make back the 800 million (US$10 million) it cost to make. After doing an item number for the song “Love Mera Hit Hit” in the drama Billu, she was in Love Aaj Kal with Saif Ali Khan, which was written and directed by Imtiaz Ali. In the movie, Padukone played Meera Pandit, a strong-willed career woman. The movie was about how the way young people value relationships is changing. Love Aaj Kal made $15 million all over the world, making it the third highest-grossing movie of 2009. The Daily News and Analysis’s Aniruddha Guha said that Padukone “delivers the best of her four performances so far.” Padukone was up for the Best Actress award at the 55th Filmfare Awards.

Padukone was in five movies that came out in 2010. Padukone’s first role was in the psychological thriller Karthik Calling Karthik, in which she played a depressed man’s supportive girlfriend (played by Farhan Akhtar). Variety’s Derek Elley said that the movie’s plot was “thin,” but that “Padukone’s uncomplicated sincerity” was the best thing about it. The movie didn’t do well at the box office. The movie that made her the most money that year was Sajid Khan’s comedy Housefull, which made 1.15 billion (US$14 million) and starred Akshay Kumar and a group of other actors. Raja Sen called the movie a “festival of bad acting” and said that Padukone’s bad acting was because of her “plasticky expressions.”

Padukone played a blind girl who was determined to win a skating competition in the 2010 drama Lafangey Parindey by Pradeep Sarkar. She got ready by watching how blind people talked to each other and practicing scenes while blindfolded. In a piece for The Hindu, Sudhish Kamath said that she played her part with “considerable restraint,” which he thought was very impressive. In her next movie, Break Ke Baad, she was paired with Imran Khan. Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN said that the movie was “watchable mostly because of the performance of its leading lady.” Padukone’s last movie of 2010 was Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, which she starred in with Abhishek Bachchan and was directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar. The movie is a retelling of the 1930 Chittagong armoury raid. It is based on the book Do and Die. Bachchan played the leader of the revolution, Surya Sen, and Padukone played his friend, Kalpana Dutta.  Padukone said she couldn’t do research for her role because there wasn’t much information about Dutta, so she followed Gowarikar’s instructions. It didn’t do well in the marketplace.

Padukone started off 2011 with a role in Rohan Sippy’s film Dum Maaro Dum. She said it was “the craziest song any actress has ever sung.” The sexual content of the song caused a lot of trouble, including a court case for being indecent. The next movie she was in was Aarakshan, a drama about caste-based reservations in India that was made by Prakash Jha. The movie didn’t do well at the box office, even though trade journalists had high hopes for it. Most critics didn’t like it, but Pratim D. Gupta said that Padukone was the “refreshing thing” about it. Her last role that year was in the comedy-drama Desi Boyz, which was directed by Rohit Dhawan and starred Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, and Chitrangada Singh. This role did not help her career, though. Critics thought that Padukone had “lost her sparkle” after a string of movies that didn’t do well.
