Vice TV’s Icons Unearthed Season 2 Explores the Rise of The Simpsons
The new season of Vice TV’s Icons Unearthed has arrived with Icons Unearthed: The Simpsons premiering on Oct. 5, 2022. From The Nacelle Company, the studio behind The Movies That Made Us, The Toys That Made Us, and A Toy Store Near You, the new season of Icons Unearthed shines a spotlight on the iconic, enduring run of The Simpsons. Exploring 36 years of the animated family’s history, Icons Unearthed goes back to its roots as a series of shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show up to today with the series now in its 34th season.
“The entire purpose of Icons Unearthed is to find the deep stories behind the creation of the most popular and iconic shows and movies. With The Simpsons, we had 36 years of groundbreaking history to dive into,” Sacelle Company Founder and CEO, Brian Volk-Weiss, tells MovieWeb about the new season.
The new season of Icons Unearthed also takes viewers “on a road trip to Springfield, USA, to uncover exclusive, previously unknown, and surprising stories sourced directly from the filmmakers, actors, and crew members who made The Simpsons one of the most beloved families on television.” Volk-Weiss directed Icons Unearthed: The Simpsons with the season including exclusive and candid interviews with a plethora of writers, actors, directors, and network executives, including Bill Oakley, Rich Moore, Jon Vitti, Mimi Pond, Doug Benson, Todd McFarlane, Garth Ancier, Phil Roman, Jennifer Howell, Julia Prescott (pictured below), and more.
Vok-Weiss executive produces the Icons Unearthed documentary series alongside Cisco Henson, Ian Roumain, Alyssa Michek, and Ben Frost. Pete Gaffney, Falguni Lakhani-Adams, and Andrea Brakke oversee the project for Vice TV.
The Simpsons Was Perfect for Icons Unearthed
The first season of Icons Unearthed explored Star Wars which had several decades’ worth of content to delve into. Following that up would have taken something that was also rich with history and a similarly compelling story about its rise to the top of pop culture. Brian Volk-Weiss recently told Screen Rant why he was so interested in tackling The Simpsons next, as there are still people out there who haven’t quite grasped the show’s accolades.
“I knew with The Simpsons in particular, people do not understand how massively successful the show is,” he said. “And even though they’re like thirty-four seasons in, and even though most people know it’s the longest-running TV show in history, and it beat Gunsmoke or Bonanza or whatever little soundbyte they memorize… people don’t understand how insanely huge this show is. I knew we needed to take the time at the beginning of the season to make sure people understood.”
The Simpsons alone can also be credited with helping the Fox network find success as well, as Volk-Weiss went on to explain. This will all be covered in the docuseries.
“I feel like the unofficial name of this season could be Icons Unearthed, Season 2: The Simpsons… and the Rise of Fox. We really tried to show how this hit right at the fulcrum of what I think is now, including streaming, the modern entertainment world we live in,” he said.
Icons Unearthed: The Simpsons premieres on Vice TV on Oct. 5, 2022, at 10 p.m.
